this saturday is deepavali, so practice is changed to friday instead. wangda will be coming.

15 august practice

Hey guys, there will be practice tmr at 11 am (same room), will be the last one until after promos, so try to turn. :D

There was a miscommunication, the barbeque is still on the 22nd august, cuz, if we put after promos, j2 got a'levels.

Jia Liang: a note for ensemble

There are so many things I want to say, but I don’t even know where to start.

I’d like to first say that I’m not angry with anyone or everyone. I’m just extremely disappointed with what has become of the ensemble. Was it something I/ the exco did or said?? I really do not know. Can you people please enlighten us?

First off there has been a steady decline of people going for the Wednesday Practice sessions, with today being worst day of all. There were only going to be 7 participants. Five of whom are part of the Exco. Pathetic right? We had no choice but to cancel practice to be fair for those who turned up.

What I really don’t understand is why this is so?
Is it because promos are coming in 50+ day time?

Yes, I can feel it too, I’m sure everyone feel it, the impeding examinations have pressured many to begin to mug. Time seems to be running out, fast.

However, as I strolled through Nanyang on my way home, I looked around and observed. The Nanyang, which is almost perpetually filled with muggers, is now filled with people getting ready for their CCA. Net ball, soccer, dragon boat, choir, band, CNNY etc. Why is it that there’s no one carrying their guitars?

Is it because you feel that you do not accomplish anything during the practices?

Well this is because probably because quite a lot of people do not practice when you are at home. I’m sure that during practice, when you look around, you can see that there are those who have came a long way since the start of the year and are still improving at very quickly. These people are those who turn up regularly for practices and put in the effort practicing at home.

Anyway, I have already prepared the tabs for the melody for “love, me”, at least the first part and we’ll probably preparing that song for our next ensemble piece in addition to what Ignatius would be teaching us this Saturday.
We will also be finding performances for the ensemble outside school, which we can write in our SGCs. However this is only possible if the skill level of our ensemble improves. That’s only possible if you people practice at home as well as turn up regularly for practices.

Is it because of Promos?

I know that the promos are important, probably the second most important exam that we would take during our short two years in Nanyang. (Probably the shortest time most of us would have spent in an educational institution) But I’m sure that each and every one of you realizes that grades and results, though important, are not the most important thing in the world.

You all might not have thought about it but I hope that you all realize that, in a little over a year’s time, we would all be parting ways and leaving Nanyang. The guys will be going to army and the girls would be going to their respective universities. And then what? Life goes on and when we think back to the time we have spent in
Nanyang, we would ask ourselves, “has it meant anything?”

The key point that I want to bring out here is that in order for our time here in Nanyang to mean something, to have an impact on our lives in future is to make friendships that last a life time. To have friends that would continue to be part of our lives even after Nanyang.

Who can honestly tell me, that learning how to play the guitar would make their lives for meaningful if it were not for the friends that we make who share our common interest? I believe that no one can truly be happy playing the guitar alone.

How is it possible for us to build friendships that lasts a life time if you people are not will to invest about (3+3) hours of our time each week to meet up for practices? I have this fear that some time in the future, when I think back to the time that I spent as part of Nanyang Guitar ensemble would be for nothing.

Another thing that I would like to address is that some of you still don’t tell either me or Yong Li when you really can’t make for guitar practice.

I’m sure that most, if not all, of you have hand phones and either Yong Li or my hand phone numbers. It takes less than a minute to sent an SMS to tell us, “I can’t make it for practice today because _______”. This would really help us a lot. I really hope that you people can help us by telling us if you can’t make it for practices.

I really hope that you people will take guitar ensemble more seriously and regularly attend the practice and lessons. If you have any suggestions on how to make guitar ensemble better and more enjoyable, you can approach any of the excos, tag on the blog, sms us, or email nyguitars@hotmail.com.

GUITAR BBQ

Hellooooooo everyone!
There is gonna be a guitar BBQ. Details as follow:

Date: 22nd Aug '09 (Sat)
Time: evening (to-be-confirmed again)
Venue: bbq pit at one of the condos near our school

we need to know the number of people coming so that we can go on with the necessary preparations,
